A common problem that many people suffer from is constant headaches. What most people don't know is that their teeth could be the cause of these never-ending headaches.
Bruxism is one of the most common causes of constant headaches, and oftentimes, those who are affected by bruxism are not even aware of it because it occurs during the night while they are sleeping.
Bruxism is the clenching and grinding of your teeth at night. We all do this periodically or in cycles, but some people do it persistently, and it can lead to pain, tension, headaches, earaches, neck pain, and even migraines.
No one is 100% sure what causes bruxism, but we know stress is a major factor in addition to hormones, medications you're on, or even sleep apnea.
Treatment involves careful evaluation and medical history review, review of your medicine, diet, and splint therapy.
Splint therapy is where we use a specifically designed appliance to help guide your jaw to a neutral position to relax the muscles and reduce contractions in pain. It's about 70% successful, and we can significantly reduce the headaches and even sometimes eliminate them.
Other therapies might be muscle relaxers, physical therapy, relaxation techniques, or even sometimes a referral to a headache or pain specialist.
